alone-one month to get estimates from at least three contractors, another to get board approval for the work and
insurance certificates from the contractor (a seperate
policy is required for your project), and another month if there are structural changes involved, for acquiring
city permits.

Jul. 18--Eileen Bowie knows what it's like to have a home improvement project go very, very wrong.
The contractor who was renovating the upper East Side condo she looks after for an out-of-town client
disappeared without warning on a long trip to Italy -- and couldn't be found. His workers didn't show up
in his absence. So, Bowie had to assemble a construction crew of her own to get the $150,000 job done.
It took four months longer than scheduled to finish.
All over town, problems with home-improvement contractors are driving people up the wall.
The city Department of Consumer Affairs fielded around 900 complaints last year about problems with home improvements.
The agency regulates 55 different types of businesses and enforces the city's consumer protection
